In 1987 I opened our country's largest Baseball Card store just outside the entrance of Disney World. We named the store Baseball Card Kingdom. The store grew so fast I had four full time employees and eight part time. Within six months of opening I promoted my best employee, Charles Ware, to General Manager. Chuck did an amazing job running the store freeing me up to work from home and travel the country buying collections building our inventory.
In 1988 Chuck had a great idea of us making our own Promotional Cards to hand out to our customers. I met with our attorney Ron Colella and he took care of getting permission from the players, their agents, and families (estates) of the deceased players.
Everything fell into place so we began making cards as fast as Ron could get permission. Truth be told we weren't sure of what we were doing so we just had various cards made without numbers and started handing them out to our customers.
As we kept experimenting with the cards Chuck came up with a great idea of making a numbered 50 card set. It was a huge success as many of our customers kept coming back over and over trying to complete their sets.
In the end we had created 11 unnumbered cards total along with the 50 numbered cards in the set. We also had a few cards that had the letter P, which stood for Promo, but Chuck didn't like those cards so we stopped making those. We also experimented with Glossy cards which we stopped after just a few because back then the Gloss ended up almost doubling our cost. I can't tell you for sure how many, but there were some cards made that were in the 50 card set that were printed without numbers in error and had to be remade.
For over 25 years I thought all the BCK cards were gone. It wasn't until my son was bringing 800 count boxes down from the attic several years ago that I started finding boxes and boxes of BCK cards.
Just last week, 11/5/2024, I found 3 more boxes in a crate that had some of the glossy cards as well as some of the "P" and Error cards.
All of these cards can be legally sold on eBay with the exception of the Wayne Gretzky cards. It seems Gretzky signed an exclusive contract and his agent rescinded his permission regarding his BCK card so if you try selling his cards be fore warned they may ask you to remove his card.
To find these BCK cards just do a search typing in KINGDOM.
